Ball fields planned for Summit park

This land has been sitting empty for the past 8 years. I am glad they are finally going to do something with it. I am sure the neighborhood (Genessee Lake Farms) to the south of this park will be happy as well. What do you think? With so many parks in the Oconomowoc area, will this park be used? If you are not familiar with the area. The park is located at the corner of Genesee Lake rd and N Dousman rd. For more information on the parks in the town of Summit visit http://www.summittown.org/town_parks/ or the Waukesha county park system http://www.waukeshacounty.gov/page.aspx?SetupMetaId=7588&id=90

Here is the full article by Paige Smaga of Living Lake Country

Posted: June 9, 2010 http://www.livinglakecountry.com/kettlemoraineindex/news/95967949.html

Town of Summit — The recently constructed sledding hill in Genesee Lake Road Park was a hit last winter with area residents, and now the park is equipped for summer fun too.

Administrator/Planner Henry Elling said the town recently completed installation of playground equipment at the park. The equipment is partially new and was funded by a community development block grant. Part of the equipment may look a bit familiar, as it was originally at Summit School. Elling said that when the school was torn down, the equipment that was still up to code was donated to the town.

Elling called the recent installation of the playground Phase 3 of the park project.

The town purchased 78 acres of farmland off Genesee Lake Road in 2002 in anticipation of eventually building a park. Elling said an initial park plan was put together in 2004 to get approval to put in a driveway and parking area, which he said was Phase 1. The idea for the sledding hill came up during that phase of work. The hill was able to be constructed at a faster pace after concrete, soil and other debris removed from Wisconsin Avenue in the City of Oconomowoc during its reconstruction in 2008 was donated to the park as fill for the hill. Elling said the hill would have been constructed over four years if it had not been for the donated “fill” from the road reconstruction project.

After giving the hill a year to settle, the 40-foot-tall sledding hill was open for public use last winter and used extensively, Elling said in a previous interview.

On June 3, the Town Board approved grading in the park to construct three baseball diamonds and Elling said there also is the potential for three soccer, football or rugby fields.

Elling said he’s looking for recreational groups that would be interested in using the fields. The fields won’t be complete until 2011, but he said the town would like to meet with interested groups and begin organizing their use of the fields.

“Representatives of these organizations can call me at Town Hall,” Elling said. The Summit Town Hall phone number is (262) 567-1721.

The board also approved installation of electrical service to the park. Elling said this clears the way for the eventual installation of security lighting and irrigations systems. He said a formal grand opening for the park is anticipated for August. The playground is open for use, but Elling noted that starting the week of June 10, there may be fences around it, as the grading work will begin in the adjacent area and last through July.

“You’ll be able to get there, but during the day it might be a bit dusty,” he said.

By next spring, Elling said 50 of the park’s 78 acres will be made into a park setting.

This past friday I had the opportunity with another first weber agent (Pam Asche) to help juniors and seniors at Lake Mills high School. Students had a opportunity to find out what living in the real world is all about. They started the day with a profile including their new job, income levels, Marriage status with or without children. From there they met with local business leaders to set up their monthly budget.

They started by first paying the government taxes. Next they had to set up a checking account with either of the two local banks, after they deducted their student loan payments they could move over to housing. I could either set them up in an apartment or they could buy a home. This was all based on their income and needs. If they were single and wanted to rent, they could find a roommate but after completing a roommate compatibility quiz.

After housing, they were able to purchase a new or used vehicle and set up insurance. A local police officer was even walking around passing out random tickets wich they had to appear in front of the judge to try and defend themselves.

Other items they were responsible for paying included phone, utilities, health and life insurance, clothing, groceries, child care and gasoline. The amounts were all based on the size of their family and home/apartment.

The last booth they stopped at was the credit booth. Here they had to make a payment on any other existing debt listed on their profile. At the end, student’s checkbook balance must be in between $0-$200 and they had to visit all the booths. The check register had to be up to date. Although, I am not sure if it would be a good thing to penalize kids for having a balance over $200.

Jennifer the business instructor had this to say. “Thanks again for another great event! I can’t wait to talk to the students tomorrow to get their feedback. That’s the really fun part! Everything went very smoothly on Friday and that is because of all of you. Your contribution is vital and will forever be remembered. The students are always impressed that you would give up your day to spend helping them. Your time is valuable, but I can assure you the impact you made will last a lifetime for these young adults.”

Lake Mills High School

Overall I think this a good event for high school students to learn about monthly budgets and real estate. I did volunteer to come back and educate students about buying their first home or investment property.

This is being done at many local high schools if you know of anyone who needs help please pass out my name.

Wisconsin is looking at building a high speed train that runs from Milwaukee to Madison. The Federal goverment would provide an 800 million grant which only cover the start of construction. It would rely heaviliy on goverment subsidies to operate. Looking through the DOT website you can download the current rail report
http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/projects/state/docs/rail-issues.pdf

The report “summarizes critical rail transportation issues, suggests opportunities for public sector involvement, and points out areas where additional research is needed.”

With an excellent freeway system which brings the current commute to an hour, do we really need this? This reminds me of an old Simpson episode that makes fun of the monorail salesperson coming into town. He leads the town to believe that this will solve all their problems. A remake from the poplar musical “Music man”

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEZjzsnPhnw]

So what are your thoughts would you ride the rail? If so what you be willing to pay for a round trip between the two cities? I would be curious to hear your thougths!
